Jordany Genao
My practice explores the visual and historical connections between Arawak-Taino cosmology, ceramics, Caribbean plants, and queerness. I embrace an anti-colonial approach that honors the deep interconnection between land, history, and culture. These elements shape the imagery in my work, engaging with time and identity to expand, celebrate and complicate notions of Caribbean identity. Reverence for nature is at the heart of my practice, serving as a bridge between history, culture, and spirituality. Natural elements affirm indigenous ancestral practices—plants which are used for co-creating homes, medicine, and portals alongside the land in interdisciplinary forms from illustration to ceramics and textiles.
